Mozambique

Isabel Novella

Born in Maputo, Mozambique growing up on music stages around the world Isabel Novella is a Pan-African singer, songwriter and composer. Unique in style and performance, Isabel has carved her own niche as performing and recording artist. Her music is best described as a balance between the Mozambican and African rhythms and the western influences. After her successful debut album, which received critical acclaim locally and abroad, Isabel Novella has finally crafted another studio album titled Metamorfose (Metamorphosis), release in May through Native Rhythms and Universal Music South Africa.

Zoe Modiga

Zoë Modiga is an artist who represents the present and future of South African music drawing from the roots of roots of African storytelling, Jazz composition and Motown soul but creating a sound entirely her own in order to communicate an evolving African sound without loosing its essence. Her love for music at a very young age encouraged her to attend the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein, Johannesburg where she studied classical piano, clarinet and vocals. She later studied Jazz performance at the College of Music, UCT. Zoë has collaborated with some of South Africa’s finest musicians including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Jonny Clegg, Simphiwe Dana, Louis Maholo, Tshepo Tshola,and many more.

Cheny Wa Gune

Musician, composer and performer, he creates compositions that explore traditional Mozambican instruments (Timbila, Mbira and Xitende) and modern instruments (Drums, bass guitar, saxophone, teclados etc…)

Born in August 1, 1980, in the city of Maputo, Cheny Wa Gune comes from a family of musicians, including uncles, cousins ​​and nephews living in Maputo,with strong origins in the Chopi people.

A charming voice engaged in world poetry and music.

Lead singer Sundri was born from unexpected love stories from the 4 corners of our planet. Living and growing as an artist in Reunion island is a powerful invitation to align her Self and share her love for Creation.

In French, English and Creole, Sundri Feeling is conquering the heart of an audience.

Ivan Mazuze

Ivan Mazuze is a Norway based composer, award winning saxophonist and world jazz artist of Mozambique origin. He initiated his studies in music at his home country Mozambique at the National Music School in 1987 with piano as first instrument. After 7 years of classical piano training, Mazuze joined the woodwind section at the same school with a jazz study approach and with focus on improvisation. After finishing the basic elementary music school, Mazuze graduated from the Department of Jazz and Ethnomusicology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa with an Honours Degree in Jazz and Composition Studies and is a Masters Graduate.

Ben Dey & The Concrete Lions

BDCL have the rare ability to produce music that feels tight, well-rehearsed but somehow also seems improvised and organic.

 Dichotomies such as these make the band so interesting. Soulful, African and organic are just some of the words used to describe their unique rock sound that saw them shoot to the top of local radio charts last year.

Lena Bahule

Lena Bahule é cantora, natural de Maputo, Moçambique, radicada no Brasil desde 2012 onde fundamentou sua pesquisa sobre a música vocal e diferentes caminhos para o uso da voz e do corpo como instrumento musical e de expressão artística. Estudou com vários artistas pioneiros de diversas técnicas ligadas a prática. Em 2016, lançou o seu primeiro CD intitulado NÔMADE que ficou na lista dos 100 melhores discos do ano que deu vida e nome ao seu atual principal projeto de música vocal inspirados na cantoria de matriz africana.

Ishmael

Once in a while an artist comes out of a not so popular place but possessing so much talent bearing testimony to the old adage “Dynamite comes in small packages”. Ishmael Morabe originally comes from the North West but came to Jozi at an early age. A street hustler who learned the tricks of the trade through the hard knock life in streets of Jozi & Hillbrow. After being under the radar for a few years, Ishmael is back and released with a brand new single titled “Gimme Gimme Gimme” which featured Featuring Cameroonian Pigin Trap God Makizar and Xigubu songstress Fiesta Black, and with Dj Megi on the beats, and is still being played on some of the biggest stations across the country!

ZIQO

Ziqo is a celebrated Producer, Sound Engineer, Vocalist and Performing Artist, he has recorded albums throughout his career, which was started at the of 15 years and he released his first Album at the Age of 17 Years titled ‘ 0 Meu Boni Born’ which was well Received by People of Mozambique. 

Born In Maputo, Mozambique, Southern Africa. Ziqo is a founder of Pandza Sound the most popular youth Sound Mozambique, which is a mixture of various African indigenous sounds

Seychelles

Grace Barbé Afro Kreol

Grace Barbe hails from the sunburnt Indian Ocean islands of the Seychelles, where a colourful history of slavery, pirates, coups d’etat and coconuts have produced a unique Kreol rhythm, language and culture. Drawing from the diverse cultural melange of the islands, Grace’s music fuses the tropical rhythms and dances of the slaves with psychedelic rock, afrobeat, reggae and pop.

In performance the trio conjures a bewilderingly huge sound-Grace sings over her own complex polyrhythmic bass lines to Mauritian drummer Hardy Perrine’s authentic island grooves while guitarist Jamie Searle adds a dense layer of Afro-guitar sorcery.

Maputo Electrónico

Maputo Electrónico is a new project gathering for the first time ever Chico Antonio (Mozambique), Smadj (France / Tunisia) and Rhodalia Silvestre (Mozambique / Eswatini).

The creation (Première at CCFM Maputo in December 2018) is giving another musical dimension to the legendary Mozambican singer Chico António by bringing electro and oud in its repertory. Through an intense musical dialogue between Smadj, Chico António and Rhodalia Silvestre (vocals), the project aims to transform traditional Mozambican music in a futurist one keeping its original soul.

Mingas

Elisa Domingas Jamisse, simplesmente Mingas, nasceu e cresceu em Moçambique. Começou a cantar na Igreja Metodista ainda muito nova. Passou por concursos de descoberta de talentos e sem dificuldades se integrou nesta arte. Mingas fez-se cantora numa fase bastante conturbada e de muita transformação em Moçambique. Ela foi uma das principais cantoras da Orquestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique durante as digressões pela Europa entre 1987 e 1988. Nesse período, recriou e gravou a solo canções como ‘Ava Sati Va Lomu’ e ‘Elisa Gomara Saia’.

Stélio Mondlane’s Project

This Music Project was created in the year of 2012 by the consecrated Drummer and Leader of the Project, Mr. Stélio Mondlane.
Mr. Mondlane is a drummer, composer and producer, with large experience in the music industry, with participations in renowned festivals, such as Azgo Festival and More Jazz Series, in Mozambique, Bushfire in Swaziland, MASA Festival in Ivory cost, Lugano festival in Switzerland, Sesco Series in Brazil, Lent Featival in Slovenia, Mindelo jazz Summer in Cape Verde and many more!

Dino Miranda

Singer, Guitarist, Composer, Arranger, Producer and CEO of Miramundo Produções, an indie Record Label in Mozambique. More than a decade ago Dino Miranda performed with his rock band around Maputo, Mozambique. Then he joined Asaga with Mozambican music legend, singer and composer Chico Antonio as a guitarist in late 1997. Dino decided to study music, first at the Fuba School of Music in Johannesburg and subsequently Jazz Studies at the University of Cape Town’s renowned College of Music from 2001 to 2004. While still at university, Dino embarked on a solo project and took to the stages around the Cape Town.

Pablo Lapidusas International Trio – PLINT

Pablo Lapidusas International Trio – P.L.I.N.T é um projecto do pianista argentino Pablo Lapidusas, em parceria com o baixista cubano Leo Espinosa e o baterista português Marcelo Araújo. O trio formou-se em 2014, e nesse mesmo ano gravou o seu primeiro álbum ao vivo no prestigiado Club The Orbit, em Johannesburgo, durante a primeira tour internacional. Em 2016 o projecto foi seleccionado para o Jazzahead (Alemanha) como um dos mais representativos da música instrumental europeia para esse mesmo ano. O concerto do trio em Bremen rendeu igualmente excelentes críticas. Na temporada de 2016/2017 o trio realizou tours pela Alemanha, Coreia, Índia, Brasil, Moçambique, África do Sul e Portugal – país de residência dos 3 músicos.

Moticoma Band

Moticoma é uma banda tradicional com um estilo musical próprio, caracterizado pelas influências étnicas dos povos africanos. É constuida por 7, jovens oriundos e praticantes da cultura tradicional. A sua música dispertou grandes horizontes, sendo esta conhecida como uma das bandas que alavancou a música tradicional moçambicana a todos os níveis. Participou de festival nacionais e internacionais a destacar; Festival da Lusofonia, Festival Azgo, Festival Raiz, Festival de Música Tradicional, em Maputo; internacionais no, L’esclavaje Festival, nas Ilhas Mauricias, Crossroads em Zimbabwe, Bassline na África do Sul, na Dinamarca, uma torné co-produzida pela DCCD e pela Associação dos Músicos Moçambicanos. Atualmente toca em eventos produzidos localmente.

MXO

MXO “The Real MXO” Lokwe has adorned the South African music industry for over thirteen years. He is a visionary and a trailblazer in the artistic scene. His quirky, eccentric and authentic fashion style, matched by his bewitching raspy voice prove that he is anything but ordinary. The debut single “Sista Kunjani” intricately showcased his distinct way of moulding afro soul, jazz, funk, traditional and pop, carving a post-modern eclectic genre which was emulated by many young musicians but never matched. In 2004 he released “Peace of Mind”, which marked the arrival of a super-star, spawning multiple hits, like Zand’iyibone, Delilah, Nomalizo and Tonight. Rich with enchanting Xhosa lyrics and immaculately marrying Funk, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Traditional and Rock – he made being an alternative musician popular in a time when it was still misunderstood.
